Welcome to Philandtropical – an site of anecdotes and stories relating to Tropical Medicine & International Health. I’ve been very busy over the past several years, so the site hasn’t yet taken the shape I’d like to. I aim to change that in time!

Me: Phil Hefford – UK trained Medical Registrar. I’ve recently moved from South England, UK to work by the Great Barrier Reef in Tropical North Queensland, Australia.
Recently achieved Gorgas Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (2025) – in Peru and subsequent CTropMed qualification from the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.
Relevant Background:
- ACCS – Medicine trained UK Doctor. Full MRCP (UK) achieved 2024.
- Several Academic Papers relating to Infectious Disease & Tropical Medicine
- DTM&H (Gorgas) and CTropMed (ASTMH) – both achieved 2025.
- Tropical Medicine Elective Placement – Sao Paulo, Brazil (2019)
- Student Specialty Rotations in Clinical Virology and time at the London Hospital for Tropical Diseases
- MSc Medical Microbiology – London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2013)
- Zoonotic Virus surveillance project at Oxford University’s Clinical Research Unit, HCMC, Vietnam (2013).
- Former Research Lead to Development Sector NGO across Tanzania, Kenya & Malawi
